101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

Well I finally got the book from the Book Depository...seems really insightful...here is a quote from the book, from a Eliel Saarinen, whoever that may be. I have been thinking a lot recently  about how my spaces can exist in the physical world and how they would function..

“Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context – a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.”

Gregor Schneider

Just beginning to research Schneider and he is already proving to be a large influence on my work....
I've been looking at this article recently in the always useful Parkett

I am interested in the way he presents the unsuspecting spectator with something very, very familiar and alters it so that the meaning behind this object is manipulated and infiltrated by the notion of the uncanny.

Examples of Impossible Spaces

Here are some works in progress...

I construct these through videoing vacant spaces, exporting the images as stills and then combining them to construct a new, impossible space that can never exist in the real world. They are of varying degrees of manipulation and style.

Impossible Spaces

My work has now changed quite a bit. However I am still interested in examining everything that I have been looking at in the past two years; the aim of the work is now more coherent to the spectator.

I was initially examining my 'Other'...the controlling figure in my mind. I wanted to create my interpretation of the architecture of the mind and place the Other in this space. However, I soon came to realise that this was not going to work out. Now I am focusing purely on these spaces that I was trying to construct. Here is my Artist Statement...

My work consists of deconstructing vacant, non-descript spaces in order to construct a new, impossible space. This space invites viewer participation because of its almost unreadable surface. The innate need of the viewer to place themselves within this space leads them to question the origin and reality of what they are looking at.

Past Photography and Stills.

Here are some examples of the type of Photography I produce. Some are purely photographs and others have been extracted from short films I have made in the past.  I am inspired by the cinema, especially Film Noir, Horror Cinema, and German Expressionist Cinema, and also by photographs that suggest an altered world eg. the work of Gregory Crewdson. The photographs act as a mere suggestion for a possible narrative, one that the viewer would be in control of.

Stroking Razor Series (Video)

These video pieces act as glimpses into an altered sense of reality. They portray my thought processes as real and integral to an average domestic envirnoment.

I am examining the adoration of and dependancy on seemingly mundane objects.


What can they signify to both the artist and viewer?

An attempt to make the non-visual, visual.

TERROR

This is a short film I completed in May 2010. Inspired by Night Terrors I experienced as a child, I am examining how the mind gears itself up, so to speak, for an incident such as this. I am interested in capturing snippets of time within the mind, and characterising these movements.

The space within the mind is a common thread in my work. I want to create a suggestion for the architecture of the mind and analyse how a figure moves within this space.
