Artist Statement (Updated)
My work deconstructs the geometric components of architecture in order to re-construct a physiological structure. Through the use of video projection I sequentially transform this space to add a virtual layer to the tangible space. Casting architecture as protagonist, I aim to encourage the viewer to orientate themselves in the psychological action of the space, through their mental constructions and psychological reactions. My primary focus is the encounter between the presence of architecture and the viewer’s projection of their emotions and perceptions onto it.

There has been a distinct lack of posts recently. I have been up the walls with my end of year show. Over the next few days I hope to update the blog with my most recent work.

Artist Statement
The last time I posted my statement was in November, and it has changed somewhat since then.
My work deconstructs the foundations of a single space in order to construct a new, impossible space. By creating a second, virtual layer to the volume of the physical space I am commenting on the tangibility of reality and space. Through the use of video projection I am controlling the sequential transformation of the space which will hopefully invite the viewer to participate in placing themselves within this space and may lead them to question the origin and reality of what they are looking at.

Deconstructed Model
When layered upon each other, the spaces left behind from model-making are interesting to look at; they retain powerful components of the negative space of the model. I created this concept digitally in order to project back into the space that the model was based on.

Countless fragments of existing architectural photography are merged into multilayered shapes. The resulting collages introduce a third abstract point of view next to the original ones of architect and photographer.
Digital scans of analogue architectural photography form tiny pieces of a large resulting puzzle. The original pictures are being analysed and categorised according to their vanishing-points and shapes. Based on this analysis, slices are being extracted from the source image. These slices retain the information of their position corresponding to their original vanishing-point and thus form a large pool of pieces, ready to be applied to new perspectives and shapes.
Using the extracted image segments, it is now possible to form collages of originally different pictures with a new common perspective. In order to compose a collage, a perspective-grid is defined and a lining of matching image segments is being applied. The segments are not altered to match the frame but fitting ones are chosen from the sheer mass of possible pieces. By defining additional keywords which describe the content of the original photographs, the selection of segments used for the final composition can be influenced. Thus a contextual layer is added through the semantic linking with the source material.
The recompositions mix and match the views and perspectives of both the architect and the photographer with a third, newly chosen frame. The resulting fine-art prints are entirely unique each time.

Davy and Kristin McGuire
This couple employ an innovative use of sets with projections and video works. They have opened my eyes to the possibilities of layering with programs such as Adobe After Effects and incorporating these with live action.

Experimental Use of Projections
My work has begun to change, finally!
Because my work is based around constructing impossible spaces for the viewer to become immersed in, I feel that the use of projection will heighten the intensity of this experience. A space that cannot be touched physically may add to their questioning of the reality and origin what they are looking at.

Deconstructivist Architecture @ MoMA (1988)
"The projects in this exhibition mark a different sensibility, one in which the dream of pure form has been disturbed. It is the ability to disturb our thinking about form that makes these projects deconstructive. Michel Gondry.
In the next few months I hope to create full-scale installations that will engage the spectator whilst also confusing them. The instability of these installations may connote the mood of the times or perhaps the mental disposition of the viewer. Michel Gondry has always been an inspiration to me, but now it is his set designs that provide another level of possibility in my work.
